These two sculptures draw inspiration from Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities. The traveler in Valdrada sees two cities: one reflected above the lake and another upside down. This reflection represents the residents' choreographed lives, creating an illusion of the tangible.

“The mirror can increase or deny value; not all that seems valuable above it retains its worth.”

The materials mirror the complex nature of human experience. The first sculpture, made of card and painted in concrete, obscures its origins. Fabric mesh on a coloured mirror distorts the barrier between the twin cities, where one city ‘haunts the other’.

The second sculpture features a rose-gold mirrored base that suggests opulence, while wood and perspex reference natural and man-made elements.

Inspired by Venice's reflections, shadows and architectural lines, the motifs I have used are taken from first hand experience of this incredible city.

Valdrada, for me, embodies a liminal space between dreams and reality, allowing exploration of both real and imagined cities.
