This set of three sculptural objects are tiny and in contrast to the large institutional buildings which inspire me. Starting with photographic documentation of the shadow shapes which form around the exterior spaces of a 1960’s University building, the captured shadow motifs have been manipulated digitally to generate various folded compositions, hand formed in aluminium and spray painted.

My interest in the history of a building, referencing archival documents such as promotional literature and photographs to learn about construction techniques or materials used, influences the decisions around my material choices, colours or surface finishes. Here the colours associated with the interiors of the 1960’s building have found their way into the work.

Details concealed and revealed by the shadows’ movements throughout the day are applied to the surfaces, but they are also a way of describing those elements which we sense but cannot put into words.

The use of cable ties represent a temporary fixing of these folded shadows as a way of containing their elusive nature. The interiors created by this act of folding invite a closer investigation, but what do we find?
